OUR HISTORY

Throughout the years the structure for the hotel and its surrounding lands has laid witness to many of the  The original structure of the hotel was built during _____ and was originally owned by the Gonsalves family as lodging for estate owners and wealthy visitors to the island.  During WWII the Inn served as a British base for soldiers and until a large fire burnt down the majority of the structure except for some retaining walls. The fire was caused by a soldier who fell asleep with his cigarette lit.  Following the fire, the ruins stayed untouched until 1945 when the hotel was purchased by Luther Robinson, a local entrepreneur, who rebuilt the structure soon after. The foundations and some of the remaining walls were used to construct what you see today as the hotel’s main building. In the reception and conference area, the thick walls are some of the remaining original walls that survived the fire. The style of the building incorporated arches into its facade which was typical of these times due to the British colonial influence on the architecture.  Once it was rebuilt the building was then rented out as a family home for ___________.  After the family left it was then leased to Robert Scott who turned it into a pub and lodging called the Mermaid Inn which catered to many of the sailors and travelers passing through the islands.   The building was then leased out to Shirley Layne who renamed it the Paradise Inn, and ran the establishment for ____ years. Mrs Layne was instrumental in transitioning the inn into one of the more well known stays on the island, leaving its pub days in the past.  At the end of her lease, the inn was taken over by the granddaughter of both Papa Syl and Luther Robinson along with her husband–Kim and Earl Halbich. They renovated and reopened the inn as the Paradise Beach Hotel in October 2007. They have since expanded the hotel and are responsible for making it the Caribbean retreat it is today. In 2016 the hotel invested in a piece of land which was developed into the Paradise Farm, which now grows the majority of the fruits and vegetables used by the hotel today organically and without the use of pesticides.  In 2019, The hotel expanded to add a pool and 8 new rooms and suites to the property.  In 2020 when the COVID 19 Pandemic hit the island, Paradise Beach Hotel was converted into a PCR testing center and quarantine site. Following the volcanic eruption of La Soufriere on April 9th 2021, the hotel acted as a shelter for persons displaced from the eruption and was one of the official kitchens for the World Central Kitchen producing approximately 750 meals per day to go to the various shelters around the island.
